Withholding

Definition

Taxes taken out of each paycheck and sent to the IRS on your behalf, controlled by your W-4. The goal is to land close to your actual tax bill: neither a scary balance due nor a giant refund.

Why it matters

Withholding is the invisible budget line that decides whether April brings a bill, a refund, or nothing. Landing near zero means your money spent the year in your accounts, not the government's.

Example

A household that owed $2,000 last April adjusts withholding upward slightly; a household that got a $4,000 refund adjusts downward. Both aim for the same target: a April surprise near zero.
