W-4

Definition

The form you give an employer to set paycheck tax withholding. A huge refund means your W-4 over-withholds: you lent the government money at 0% all year.

Why it matters

The W-4 is the dial on your paycheck's size. Set it well and your money works for you all year; set it badly and you either lend the IRS thousands interest-free or face a scary April bill.

Example

After a $3,600 refund, a worker updates their W-4 to withhold about $300 less per month. The refund disappears, and the $300 flows into their Roth IRA every month instead of waiting at the IRS.
