Checking account

Definition

The transactional bank account your paycheck lands in and bills flow out of. It should hold about a month of spending; larger balances belong somewhere that pays interest.

Why it matters

Checking is for flow, not storage. Balances parked there earn nothing and get spent by osmosis; the fix is a small buffer plus automatic sweeps to savings.

Example

A household keeps one month of expenses ($4,500) in checking as a buffer against timing hiccups, and an automatic payday transfer moves everything above that line to a high-yield savings account.
