Personal finance glossary

High-yield savings account (HYSA)

Definition

An FDIC-insured savings account, usually at an online bank, paying many times the national-average rate. The standard home for emergency funds and short-term goals.

Why it matters

Same insurance, same liquidity, ten times the interest: moving idle savings to a HYSA is the highest effort-to-payoff move in personal finance. The big banks count on inertia.

Example

$20,000 of emergency savings earns about $900 a year at 4.5% APY in a HYSA versus about $90 at a traditional 0.45% account. One afternoon of account opening is worth $800 a year.
