1099 form

Definition

A family of IRS forms reporting income earned outside a regular paycheck, such as freelance pay (1099-NEC), interest (1099-INT), and investment sales (1099-B). If you receive 1099 income, taxes are usually not withheld for you, so you may need to make quarterly estimated payments.

Why it matters

1099 income arrives without taxes taken out, so the bill lands on you at filing time. Freelancers who do not set money aside or pay quarterly estimates routinely get hit with a surprise balance plus underpayment penalties.

Example

A designer bills $30,000 of side work and receives a 1099-NEC. Nothing was withheld, so they set aside roughly a quarter to a third of each payment and send the IRS quarterly estimated payments instead of facing one large April bill.
