Definition
Net worth counting only assets that convert to cash quickly without heavy penalties or forced discounts: cash, savings, and taxable brokerage holdings. Home equity, retirement accounts locked behind early-withdrawal penalties, and vehicles are excluded or steeply discounted.
Why it matters
Total net worth measures progress; liquid net worth measures survivability. A household can be wealthy on paper and unable to raise $10,000 in a week, which is exactly the situation emergencies exploit.
Example
A family's $500,000 net worth breaks down as $350,000 of home equity, $110,000 in retirement accounts, and $40,000 across savings and a brokerage account. Their liquid net worth is roughly $40,000: the number that answers a layoff, not the $500,000.
