Definition
A 300-850 number summarizing your credit risk, used to price loans and sometimes screen apartment and insurance applications. Payment history and utilization drive about two-thirds of it.
Why it matters
Your score prices every future loan: over a 30-year mortgage, the gap between fair and excellent credit is often tens of thousands of dollars. It is infrastructure worth maintaining even if you hate debt.
Example
Two buyers borrow $300,000. The 760-score buyer gets a meaningfully lower rate than the 640-score buyer; the monthly difference alone can exceed $100, compounding to tens of thousands over the loan.
